The Big Reveal!
The Lucky Dip Quilt Challenge quilts on display at this year’s quilt show are a true celebration of creativity, courage, and imagination. What began as a simple set of blocks and a series of random “lucky dip” instructions quickly transformed into an exciting quilting adventure where every participant interpreted the challenge in their own unique way.
Each quilter started with nine blocks and, over several months, responded to surprise prompts that encouraged cutting, reshaping, inserting fabrics, adding curves, borders, appliqué, and unexpected design elements. The challenge pushed participants outside their comfort zones and inspired them to trust the creative process.
The result is a stunning and diverse collection of quilts that showcase the individuality of their makers. No two quilts are alike. Some evolved into bold contemporary designs filled with dramatic movement and colour, while others embraced softer palettes, playful improvisation, or carefully balanced traditional elements. Visitors to the quilt show loved seeing how the same starting point led to completely different outcomes.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Lucky Dip Challenge has been watching members experiment with techniques and ideas they may never have tried otherwise. The challenge encouraged spontaneity, problem solving, and creative risk-taking, proving that quilting is not only about precision and planning, but also about discovery and fun.
The quilts told a story of growth, friendship, and shared inspiration within our quilting community. Along the way, participants shared progress photos, encouraged one another, and celebrated the unexpected twists and turns created by each monthly challenge.
And we can’t go without saying, a big thank you to Peggy for organising the challenge. It was great fun and made you work outside your comfort zone. You had to stop over thinking things and just do it!
The Lucky Dip Quilt Challenge display at the quilt show inspired people to think differently about their own quilting journey and perhaps even join the next creative challenge!
