Helen Comport shares her story
Helen Comport OAM was our amazing guest speaker at this week’s Monthly Meeting. She shared with us the story her son’s role defending our nation and of how Quilts of Valour Australia was born.
Quilts of Valour Australia began with a simple but powerful idea: to recognise the service and sacrifice of Australian Defence Force members and family through the gift of a handmade quilt. Following tragic loss and injury to Defence Personnel and inspired by a similar movement that originated in America, the concept quickly resonated with Australian quilters who were looking for a meaningful way to give back.
The initiative took shape when a small group of passionate volunteers saw the impact that quilts—symbols of comfort, warmth, and care—could have on those who had served. They recognised that beyond physical warmth, a quilt could provide emotional healing, acknowledging experiences that are often difficult to put into words. From these humble beginnings, Quilts of Valour Australia was established as a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to presenting quilts to serving members, veterans and family members of the Australian Defence Force touched by war or conflict.
As word spread, quilting groups, individuals, and community organisations across the country began contributing their time, skills, and materials. Each quilt is carefully handcrafted, often incorporating meaningful colours, fabrics, and designs that reflect respect, gratitude, and national pride. The process itself became a collective act of generosity, with many hands working together to create something deeply personal. Each quilt is given with a certificate, cover letter explaining the meaning of the quilt and a special QOV label.
Over time, the organisation has grown into a nationwide network of volunteers, coordinators, and supporters. Presentation ceremonies—sometimes private, sometimes public—are a central part of the Quilts of Valour experience. These moments are often deeply moving, offering recipients a tangible expression of appreciation from the community they have served.
Today, Quilts of Valour Australia continues to expand its reach, with hundreds of quilts awarded each year. What began as a small, heartfelt idea has evolved into a powerful national movement—one that stitches together gratitude, remembrance, and community spirit, one quilt at a time.
