A workshop with Emma
by Alison Kennedy-Cooke
On a recent Saturday, we were joined by members of the Australian Quilters Association (AQA) and 16 of us took a class on paper piecing with Emma Jean Jansen.
Emma’s method of foundation piecing uses freezer paper, a waxy paper from the USA, typically used for wrapping and freezing food. When heated, fabric sticks temporarily to the paper which is used as a template and easy to manipulate. We each chose one of three patterns (Pickled Orange Peel, Harlequin Stars and Wheel of Fortune) and were able to create sharp points and beautiful curves accurately.
We did some preparation beforehand, which meant we could get straight into the stitching.
Emma was very generous with her time and brought along lots of samples in different stages of completion which was super helpful. No-one managed to complete a quilt top , but there were some really beautiful blocks finished and I’m sure everyone learned plenty of new tips and tricks. I will definitely be using this technique again.
Thanks Emma and the AQA members for joining us. It was a super fun day.
